About Maison Akira

Chef Akira takes personal interest in preparing each selection with the freshest ingredients for a culinary delight. His signature entrées include Miso Marinated Grilled Chilean Sea Bass and Roasted Rack of Lamb in a Rosemary Sauce.

Chef Akira was born and raised in Kyoto, Japan to a Certified Public Accountant father and a homemaker mother. Instead of following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, Hirose instead enjoyed helping his mother in the kitchen with the meals from a young age. Upon completion of high school, he moved to France where he studied under world renowned Chef Joel Rovuchon. Practicing his culinary skills, Chef Akira worked at Maxime’s in Paris and went on to study the fine art of pastries at Ecole de Lenotre.

After working in France for eight years, Chef Akira came to Los Angeles and joined the kitchen staff of L’Orangerie Restaurant. After two years, he moved back to Japan to open his own restaurant, Azay Le Rideau, which became one of the Top 50 French Restaurants in all of Japan. Returning to Los Angeles, he has satisfied many patrons at Citrus, Georgian Room at the former Ritz Carlton in Pasadena, Belvedere Restaurant in the Peninsula Hotel, Beverly Hills, the Executive Chef at Tower Restaurant, Los Angeles, where he created an exquisite menu for the Emperor & Empress of Japan during their visit in 1994, and in September of 1998 he opened Maison Akira in Pasadena.

Some awards Chef Akira received: Chef of the year in 1998 by the Southern California French Chef’s Association, Fu Rei Ai Award in 2008 by Little Tokyo Service Center, KCET and Union Bank Asian Pacific American Heritage “Local hero” Award in May 2009, and the Pacific Pioneer Award by the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center.

Chef Akira truly believes it is important to help the community and has supported many community events for manuy years: the annual Beasty Ball fundraiser for the Los Angeles Zoo, Sake Event for the Little Tokyo Service Center, and Huntington Memorial Hospital.
